Keister Elementary School

Sticker Sheet, Typography Poster, and Outdoor Sign

Elementary school located in Harrisonburg, VA, teaching grades Pre-K through 5.

Sticker Sheet

The Objective

Create a sticker sheet on Adobe Illustrator with five different stickers for Keister Elementary School that represent mindfulness.

Creative Approach

My approach for this was to create a theme highlighting the positive aspects of nature, such as butterflies, flowers, and the sky, to symbolize mindfulness and the joy nature brings.

Final Deliverable

Improvements

  • Give the sheet an overall theme.

  • Separate nature concepts into singular sticker idea such as a cloud, sun, flowers, heart and butterfly

  • Remove large text.

  • Keep concise color scheme and sticker style.

Typography Poster

The Objective

Create a typography poster on Adobe InDesign based on a Haiku poem about nature and mindfulness written by a Keister students. It also must include it in English and Spanish as well as the Keister logo.

The Haiku

English:

English:

I looked at the sky

Some of the tree leaves are pink

And I saw a bird

Spanish:

Spanish

Miré al cielo

Algunas de las hojas de

los árboles son rosadas.

Y vi un pájaro

Creative Approach

Since the Haiku I selected included words such as sky, pink, and bird, I wanted to incorporate each of these words into their own symbol. I wanted it to feel fun and whimsical, yet still simplistic. I decided to use a color palette of pink, blue, yellow, and white.

Improvements

  • Make background a solid color.

  • Switch text to Spanish and include a English translation.

  • Add small art elements to enhance the  key points of the haiku.

  • Change the font type to a playful and airy style.

  • Keep text color neutral but emphasize key words with color.

Outdoor Sign

The Objective

  • Use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create an outdoor sign for KES 'mindfulness meadow' which is an outdoor open space composed of learning spaces for students to use.

  • Each sign will state a different mindful activity for students to engage in.

  • Use students artwork in the sign.

  • Include the activity in English and Spanish

  • Include interactive questions and a fun fact that relates to your activity.

Creative Approach

  • We took a trip to KES and got to meet with students to see their artwork and have them draw a picture based on our activity.

  • The students I met with inspired me to go off a theme of "70s groove" with boom boxes, dancing, disco balls, and a warm colored rainbow.

  • I searched for students art that could represent dancing or anything music related.

Student Artwork

The Activity

English:

Teach a friend your favorite dance move.

Spanish

Enséñale a un amigo tu movimiento de baile favorito.
